Dan Robert Lahiani (b. 1987, France) is an artist who lives and works in Jerusalem. Currently part of a long term studio residency at the Art Cube Artists’ Studios
His approach revolves around body movement, architecture and words. His work covers different angles of video, movement and photography mediums. Since 2019, Dan Robert Lahiani brings the therapeutic aspect of his creation to a more intimate and refined space putting his body in movement through rituals (Chi Gong and Tai Chi practice ) initiating a new dancing language. He questions the process of creating an image, and its relevancy within his personal quest for connection, home and healing. This reflection is one of the aspects of his last piece “ Bé Gouf Rishon” (2022).
The works compile physical and linguistic expressions ; and incorporate documentary scenes with staged scenes, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. Dan Robert Lahiani puts himself along with his artist partner, or his family, into performative characters. Movement is at the center of the process of creation. In some of his works, he loses control over his video camera and lets it transform into a random, independent object, he calls caméra vivante. This living camera sets the world around it in motion, and initiates a dance with the performers, generating impossible, unstable vantage points and axes of motion.
His works were exhibited/screened in museums and galleries such as the Jerusalem Artists’ House (Jerusalem, Israel, 2018), The Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco, U.S, 2017), Mana Contemporary Chicago (Chicago, U.S, 2017), Nikolaj Kunsthal (Copenhagen, Denmark, 2017), p8 Gallery (Tel Aviv, Israel, 2019), Art Cube Artists’ Studios (Jerusalem. Israel, 2019), Kunstraum8020 (Graz, Austria, 2019), Schaumbad Freies Atelier (Graz, Austria, 2019), The Morgan Library Museum ( New York, U.S, 2020), Zaz Corner ( New York, U.S, 2020, collaboration with Screen Based. Art Dept of Bezalel), Tel Aviv Cinémathèque (Israel,2020), Jerusalem Cinémathèque (Israel, 2019), Tel Aviv University (Israel, 2019), Kunstraum8020( Graz, Austria)
His video works were also part of international film festivals, such as the “Israel Festival” (2021), Athens International Video and Film Festival (U.S, Ohio, 2021), Brussels Independent Film Festival (Belgium, 2021), Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival (2020), Berlin Revolution Film Festival (Germany, 2017), or Blow-Up film festival (Chicago, U.S, 2017).
